Urban Castellan
Today we are gonna take a look at an exciting new knife from Urban EDC called the Urban Castellan!
These knives are prototypes but they are available to pre order right now on Urban EDC’s website with delivery expected in August 2025. Links will be in the description below.
The Castellan is available in 6 different flavors but all of them are made with CPM Magnacut blade steel and robust titanium handles. There are also two different textures available for the handles. . . dragon scale or rock pattern. Today’s examples are dragon scale Blurple with a two tone blade and a rock pattern dark bronze handle with stone washed blade.
The urban Castellan is collaborative effort with Urban EDC and John Demko from Demko Knives. The results of this collaboration do not disappoint! The knife is made in China by Reate and the quality is extremely impressive.
The knife measure in at 6.75″ overall which lands a solid 3 finger grip on the beefy titanium handle. This author prefers larger knives in general, but sometimes your situation may call for a smaller, lighter EDC. The size of the Castellan is certainly not a deal breaker if you are looking to round out your rotation or if you prefer medium size knives. You can get a full 4 finger grip on the knife when utilizing the generous finger choil.
The Magnacut blade measures 2.87″ and this little powerhouse weighs in at 3.2 ounces putting this knife right in Goldie Locks range for the perfect deep cover, every day carry knife.
The design is rounded out with a generous flipper tab and reverse flick hole in the blade, custom titanium hardware and a deep carry pocket clip. If that’s not enough for you, how about a limited lifetime warranty?
Other styles include bead blast and dark wash handle finishes. The dragon scale versions have a slight contour to the scales whereas the rock pattern is more squared off providing more of a square, heftier feel in the hand. If you are looking for comfort and ergos, the dragon scale’s lightly contoured handle profile will be more to your liking.
The dragon scale texture has a grippy fell but it’s not overly aggressive. Just enough to give you a firm solid grip despite the soft, smooth feel of the Blurple anodizing. The rock pattern is a little more smooth to the touch but it still has a confident, secure feel even if you are using the knife in cold or wet conditions.
The two examples we reviewed have absolutely amazing detents with super crispy actions! The blades flip open quickly and with a satisfying metallic snap! When you’re done admiring the fantastic fit and finish of the blade, you’ll find the frame lock comfortable and easy to depress and the blade drops shut like a dream!
The reversible deep carry pocket clip lets the Castellan disappear into your pocket but allows the knife to be ready for quick deployment whenever you need it. The clip tension is strong enough to hang on to your pocket seem but it shouldn’t destroy your pants as many other rigid clips tend to do.
All in all, the Urban Castellan is a awesome EDC knife with a strong pedigree in design and performance! With various finishes and textures, you are sure to find a version that will jump to the top of your carry rotation in no time! You really can’t go wrong with this knife.
